Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of the most famous works of Vermeer’s legacy of only 36 paintings. This tronie – a painting of an imaginary figure – represents a young woman, wearing an oriental turban and an improbably large pearl in her ear, in a dark shallow space of intimate setting that draws the viewer’s attention exclusively to her. Unlike the remaining paintings of this “Master of Light”, in this piece, does not represent a daily chore and the girl actually meets the viewer’s eye; and as Mona Lisa’s, her expression along with her unknown identity, are one of Art’s true mysteries.
